When Your Brand Needs a Little Resurrection

There’s something about resurrection fern that has always fascinated me.

When conditions are dry, it curls up, turns brown, and can look completely lifeless. It can appear as though it’s finished.

Then the rain comes.

The fern unfurls. It turns green. It comes back to life.

And I think there’s a lesson in that for business owners, too.

Sometimes your business doesn’t need a restart. Your brand just needs to catch up.

Businesses evolve.

Maybe you started with a simple logo because you needed something to put on a business card.

Maybe your website was built quickly because you needed to get online.

Maybe you created your social media pages years ago and have been using the same graphics, colors, and messaging ever since.

And maybe, somewhere along the way, your business became something much bigger—or simply different—than what you originally imagined.

But your brand never quite caught up.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to start over.

It may simply mean your brand needs a little resurrection.

Your business has changed. Has your brand?

One of the biggest signs that it’s time for a brand refresh is that your business no longer looks or sounds like the business you actually run.

You may find yourself thinking:

  • “My website doesn’t really represent us anymore.”

  • “Our social media feels inconsistent.”

  • “We’ve grown, but our branding still looks like when we first started.”

  • “I don’t know what to say about our business anymore.”

  • “I know we’re good at what we do, but our online presence doesn’t show it.”

  • “I look at our marketing and it just feels…tired.”

Those feelings are worth paying attention to.

Your brand is often the first impression someone has of your business. If that first impression doesn’t reflect the quality, personality, experience, or direction of your business today, there is a disconnect.

And your customers can feel that disconnect—even if they can’t quite put it into words.

A brand refresh isn’t necessarily a complete makeover.

I think this is an important distinction.

A brand refresh doesn’t always mean throwing everything away and starting from scratch.

Sometimes the foundation is still good.

Maybe your logo just needs some refinement.

Maybe your colors need updating.

Maybe your website needs clearer messaging and better organization.

Maybe your social media needs a consistent visual identity.

Maybe you need to finally put into words what makes your business different.

Or maybe all of those pieces simply need to start working together.

The goal isn’t to make your business look like someone else’s.

The goal is to make your brand look and feel like the business you’ve become.

Growth can be messy.

Businesses don’t usually grow in a perfectly straight line.

There are busy seasons and slow seasons. Pivots. New products. New customers. New ideas. Mistakes. Successes. Changes in direction.

Sometimes we get so busy running the business that we don’t have time to step back and look at how we’re presenting it.

And that’s okay.

Your brand may simply be showing its age because you’ve been busy building something.

That’s not failure.

That’s growth.

Maybe it’s time to unfurl.

I love the resurrection fern because it doesn’t fight its environment.

When conditions aren’t right, it pulls inward.

And when the conditions change, it opens back up.

There is something beautiful about that kind of resilience.

As a business owner, you may have had seasons when your business felt stuck, quiet, or uncertain. You may have changed direction. You may have taken a break. You may have realized that what worked five years ago doesn’t work anymore.

That doesn’t mean you’re starting from nothing.

You’ve gained experience.

You’ve built relationships.

You’ve learned what works—and what doesn’t.

You’ve grown.

Your brand can grow with you.

Sometimes resilience isn’t about starting over.

Sometimes it’s about coming back as the version of your business you were always meant to build.
